Interview Tips by Kristina Shope

Before attending an interview… here are a few things you should consider:

Important Job Interview Tips:
-Be Smart. Dress smart and “dress for success”. Consider suitable dress code for a particular job. In most cases, excessive piercings and overdone tattoos are frowned upon. Most importantly have a positive attitude.
-Use Eye Contact. Try to relax and appear confident.
-Work on your handshake. Make sure it is not too firm or too soft. A simple handshake can say a lot about ones personality.
-Sell yourself. Share great things about yourself and how you would contribute to the company.
-Listen. Do not be too aggressive during an interview. It is the interviewer’s job to conduct the interview. Wait until after the question has been completely stated before answering.
-Don’t waffle. Be clear and concise when answering. In other words, “do not beat around the bush”.
-Body Language. 80% of communication is nonverbal. Good posture and a smile are very important when trying to conduct oneself in an interview.
-Ask Questions. Show interest in the company.
End your interview with a smile. Leave them with a good impression.
-Punctuality. Do not be late to an interview. As a rule of thumb, arrive 5 minutes before. Be aware of the location and the interviewer’s name.
-Prepare. Do research before-hand about the company and its goals. If necessary practice the interview before-hand and become familiar with what the interviewer might ask.
-Know Your CV/Resume. Know the places and times in which you worked/volunteered and what your learned from each.

Some Questions to Expect during an interview:
-Tell me about yourself
-What do you know about the company?
-What are your strengths/weaknesses?
-Why did you leave your last job?
-Why should we hire you?
-Do you have any references?

  1. This is such a great post! I feel like more students should be better informed of these types of tips that could further help them get a job. I do not think that students realize how much their body language can affect an interview. It really can make or break it. I also feel like people do not prepare well enough for job interviews. I think that they should research a little bit about the companby they are applying for and dress for success!

    Great Tips,

  3. This is great information! I have been at my job for 2 years, and my boss picked me up from my prior job, so I never had to do an interview.
BUT, I wish I could give this information for people that try to get a job at our agency, because the interview will make or break if you are going to get the job.
    Good post!

  4. Sorry Caitie, after I posted...didn't see that you also used the phrase, "make or break it", totally wasn't stealing anything from you!

  5. One of the most useful questions to be prepared for is the one asking, "What are your weaknesses?" If you are unable to list weaknesses, you might come off as pompous and far to self assured. Or if you randomly list the WRONG weakness, like you have trouble in team work or something like that, you could end up not getting the job.

In conclusion, for my job interview "What are your weaknesses?" is one question I am going to have to be prepared for.

    So good article!

  6. The key to answering that question about your weaknesses is to make the weakness sound like a strength. For example, "I tend to put too many hours into the job because I'm a perfectionist."
Kristina, be sure and put your full name after the title of your post.

  7. Another helpful post. I am always insanely nervous when going in to an interview because I never know what to expect! Every interview is different, especially in the restaurant business where the restaurants are asking questions specific to their clientele and product. Researching the company is a great point to make! My last interview went well because I knew the company and what it was expecting of me!
